In The Moment - Eating

Notes for Meditation
Talk About being "in the moment."

We are lead by our head, the body is always trying to catch up with the mind.

For example: You are in the shower, its Monday morning, The weekend was busy, and you know the week is going to be hectic.

Even though you are standing beneath the warm gentle spray of the shower, and massaging your head and body with shampoo and soap. You body responds with a warm comfortable shiver of contentment.

Your "Mind" does not even notice. Your mind is already with the days agenda, The annoying train ride to work, the crushing subway, a meeting with the boss, what to eat for lunch? The report that needs to be finished before you can leave. The annoying ride home. What to make for dinner, Oh yes! Your sons birthday party next weekend, the family visit next month, what are you going to do with them for a week, The vacation you have to plan for next summer, did I pay my car payment this month. . .

By the time you get out of the shower you are exhausted! And the day has not begun and your already looking for the weekend!

Try and enjoy the "moment" in the shower, the warm gentle spray, and the massaging of the head and body.

Experience "each moment." That does not mean to "try" and enjoy the moment, just experience it. It is foolish to try and enjoy every moment, we can only experience.

Another example:

Walking through a quiet parking lot, do you notice it is dark and empty, the group of people hiding in the shadows, the broken light over your car. Your hands full of groceries and the keys are buried deep in your pockets. Or are you think that you should not have spent so much on the groceries, that you didn't really need that quart of ice cream or the chocolate cookies. Did you remember to lock the door when you left your house. The annoying train ride to work again! Try to stay in the moment. Become aware of your surroundings, stay focused and alert on what's happening right now, today.

Chew
Become aware of the food, how the jaw works, how the muscles of the face manipulate the food. Enjoy the taste of the food, do not think about the food, experience the food.

Chew each bite 33 times, put the food down after you have taken a bite, do not force the food, let the food dissolve, experience the transformation of the food from the chewing though the final dissolving until there is nothing. Then experience the swallowing of the food, following as it travels though the body into the stomach.

Crunch
experience the crunch, the snap as it breaks off into the mouth, again experience the muscles and how the move the jaw with in turn moves the food within the mouth.

As before chew each bite 33 times, and experience the transformation of the food from beginning to end. Experience the differences from chewing. And again follow each swallow though the body, be for taking another bite.

Fruit
A new experience, fruit, sweet, tart, full of juice, also the texture of fruit is very different, Fruit is a delight, enjoy how it makes you feel. Food can create emotional sensations as well as physical.

Again chew each bite thoroughly, do not count this time, but wait until each mouthful has fully dissolved before taking another, see if the second bite is as good as the one before it, or does the sensation diminish with each bite. As before, follow the journey through the body. Can you feel the difference in the stomach between the food types.

The food that you eat becomes a part of you, nourishing, creating life, even the journey from the stomach through the colon, until finally the journey comes to an end and we must left go of the food, that to I want you to experience.

Liquid
Take a mouthful of the liquid, do not swallow. "Swish" the liquid around the mouth, between the teeth, around the tongue. Let it rest before swallowing. And once more as before "listen" as it travels within. Sit for a moment before, once again raising the liquid to the mouth.

Rest
Do not "rush" from the table when complete. Sit for a while, breath, experience the body, how it feels after the meal.

Do you feel complete? Sated? At rest? Or do you feel like you have over eaten, a beached whale, uncomfortable, lazy, drained?

Food is energy for the body. Like fuel for a car, cheap, poor quality fuel can cause a car to hesitate, to miss, to not run right, until finally, it is unable to perform.

Remember that, the next time you reach for the "ring-ding!" Once in a while it's fine if we stay on a fairly healthy diet most of the time, once in a while, "junk food" taste great!

Experience the journey. The destination will take care of itself.
